The Bernama news agency reported that Anwar took the oath of office as Malaysian PM at 17.06 local time.
“I, Anwar Ibrahim after being appointed to hold the post of Prime Minister, solemnly swear that I will honestly carry out the duties of my office with all my might and that I will devote my true allegiance to Malaysia,” said Anwar while reading his oath of office .
Sultan Abdullah appointed Anwar as the next PM of Malaysia on Thursday (24/11) afternoon local time. The appointment was announced by the Superintendent of the Royal Malaysian Household, Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.
The announcement was made after Sultan Abdullah held a special meeting with Malay kings. “Having finalized the views of the rulers of Malaysia, His Majesty gave his approval to appoint Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (Member of Parliament for Tambun) as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia, in accordance with His Majesty’s authority stipulated in Article 40(2)(a) and Article 43 (2)(a) Federal Constitution,” said Malaysian Royal Household Superintendent Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin. The appointment of prime minister by the King of Malaysia is governed by the Federal Constitution and is based on Malaysia’s long-standing unique constitutional monarchy system. It is known that Article 40 paragraph 2(a) and Article 43 paragraph 2(a) of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia provides for the authority of the King of Malaysia to appoint a Prime Minister who is believed to have majority support in parliament or the People’s Council.
Sultan Abdullah’s decision to appoint Anwar as Malaysia’s prime minister ended the political deadlock that had enveloped Malaysia for days since the elections were held last November 19. Neither party nor political coalition won an absolute majority gaining 112 seats out of a total of 222 parliamentary seats to form a new government.
The three main coalitions, namely Pakatan Harapan, Perikatan Nasional and Barisan Nasional won 82, 73 and 30 seats respectively, which led to the hanging parliament for the first time in Malaysia.
Parties and political coalitions failed to reach a consensus after the election results were released, plunging Malaysia into five days of limbo.
Until finally a special meeting was held by the Malay Kings and Sultan Abdullah at the State Palace on Thursday (24/11) at around 11.00 local time. This special meeting allowed Sultan Abdullah to ask for views and opinions from the Malay Kings regarding the formation of a new government (TS/DC/MJ)

Akhiri Kebuntuan Politik, Raja Tunjuk Anwar Ibrahim Ditunjuk Jadi Perdana Menteri Malaysia
